Koreana, Boston (코리아나, 보스톤)

대충 이런 내용이 아니었을까... 아.. 정말 배 터지게 웃었다 그날 ㅡ.ㅡ;;;

update #1.
커허.. 엄청난 결례를... ㅡ.ㅡ;;;

Drowning

Today, I was almost drowned during swim class. We moved out from a practice pool which is sallow to deep one (~ 2.5m) to try 'floating' (i.e. stay still in one spot and breath. Is it vertical floating? I don't what is a correct word for that).

Since this is my first time to learn how to swim, I have never tried to float before as well.
At the first time, I grabbed the wall and tried to float. After a few minutes, I released the wall in order to see if I could float.. But, you know, of course I was sinking into the water. Actually, I expected that so I was not scared.

But... I expected that I could reach the bottom and kick it to come back to the surface.. But... no.. I was failed to reach the bottom and running out of my breath just inside the water..

After about 10(?) seconds of struggling to reach the bottom, I almost ran out of my breath and actually drank water through my nose and mouse.. I think I was about to be drowned :)

Anyway, fortunately, just at that time (after drank some water), I reached the bottom (thanks god...) and could come back to the surface and grab the wall again.

Interestingly, I was not in panic at all even when I drank a lot of water due to lack of oxygen in my lung. I was almost calm.. hm...., which means... what?? Maybe I'm that much dull? haha..

Lesson : Stick to the stairs at the wall if you want to try float. At least you can grab the stairs and climb.

(Mt. Cardigan, Boston)

뭔 산행 중에 과제가... 살짝 귀찮긴 했으나 ㅡ.ㅡ;;

My Macbook Pro and iPod touch.

I really like them :)

What a amazing.

Different colors and symbols mean different variability types. The majority of the biggest cluster above (blue one) might be non-variable stars, even though the cluster is overlapped with tons of variable stars.

With these kind of indice (I have multiple indice derived from light-curves), I used a machine learning technique to classify each of the variability. And, a preliminary result is pretty amazing.. It can classify each of class with very high accuracy.

I also have totally different kind of indices I didn't implement yet, so if I use those indice, I guess our algorithm could beat any of previous algorithms with a factor of (at least) ~2. For a specific variability type, maybe the factor would be bigger than 5 or 10.

Nevertheless, I'm exciting now hehe :)

Swim class

I just starts to learn. Well yeah, I don't know how to swim :)
Today was the first class, and... wow.. I'm full now... drank too much water..

update #1. now I can swim from one side to other side without breathing and with only kicking.. well.. because I do not know how to stroke or how to breath T_T..
Anyway, it's still hard for me to finish one-way trip :)

Support Vector Machine

There are several python packages which provide SVM.

LIBSVM, MLPY, PyML, SVM^python

LIBSVM has been included in a lot of other packages to provide SVM. It looks like very powerful library for SVM. However, it is not 'perfectly' and 'clearly' wrapped with python and doesn't provide other classification method except SVM.

PyML seems simple and easy to use, but looks like it is in its beginning stage of development.

So far, MLPY looks most 'useful' package for python users. It provides multiple kernels for SVM and also provides KNN or other classification function. Moreover, it has a function which can calculate accuracy of prediction. Not bad at all. (Actually, LIBSVM has almost identical SVM modules too.)

But, I didn't compare their performance (especially for LIBSVM and MLPY) or didn't do real test yet. I'll update the results soon.

You can download all the packages above from internet. Do Google :)

P.S The above image is from Google image.

update #1: Shit... MLPY looks like not supporting multiclass-classification for SVM..

update #2. I was wrong. PyML has almost all function for SVM. It uses LIBSVM for SVM and also provide KNN function. It just doesn't have a good tutorial document :)

update #3. well.. I'm going to use LIBSVM even though it doesn't provide good python wrapper. I'm implementing a python routine for parameter set search and modified version of cross_validation of LIBSVM.

Python ctypes and Cython

http://cython.org/

Looks promising, especially Cython. I'm going to test both of them.

Update #1. After I tested ctypes with some C shared object which calculates periods of time series, I found ctypes is about 5% slower than pure C. Well, I need to test more, however, it looks very good so far. Only 5% :)

Pain in the ass

OK OK.. It's all my fault to upgrade to Snow Leopard, and to be persistent to use 64bit python2.6..

BTW.. Even though how hard I try, I cannot compile matplotlib.. How much hours I have wasted for that.. Numpy, Scipy works just fine after installing them using easy_install.

but.. bloody matplotlib.. shit...

Do I have to use python 2.5 or.. just wait until they correct problems..?

update #1 : There is one solution to install matplotlib.

http://blog.hyperjeff.net/?p=160

Though..

update #2 : OK, fink (new version for Snow Leopard) looks like working well. I'm installing 64 bit python2.6 and all other packages. So far, so good. Nevertheless, Iit's a little bit strange because my experience of fink at Leopard (OS X 10.5) was not that good.

update #3 : R is not ready yet because gcc43 is not available on Snow Leopard. R should change its dependency from gcc43 to gcc44.. hm..

I'm a Ph.D student..

and I didn't know how to open the sink in shower....

OK, the full story is here,
One day I found the shower in my house didn't work, which means water was just sitting there.
So, I poured almost three bottles of clog removers but it still didn't work..
I tried the 'things' which can give pressure to the hole, which is usually used for a toilet.
I tried a thin and strong wire to clean the path of the shower...

I tried everything I could.. and I failed...

After about two weeks of hard trying, I asked my friend if he has thinner and softer wire than I tried, and he came with an wire to help me.

and.. just after 5 minute he's trying.. he just found out that I didn't 'open' the sink...
There was a small switch which can open the skin in shower which I didn't notice before...

After two weeks of hard works.....
The solution was the 'switch'... F*ck.... I spend almost $30 for the clog removers...

P.S. After he fixed the shower, I just realized that I did know how to use that 'switch'..
Because my previous house has same switch, and I used it frequently...

What a stupid.. I just moved in new house, and I forgot everything I'd learned while living in the previous house...? :)

Play Chess

I started to learn Chess. As some of you might know, there is a similar Chinese game called Jang-Ki (장기). I think I'm not that bad player of Jang-Ki but Chess is quite different from it.

Especially, it's a little bit hard to get used to use Queen and Bishop because there are no such pieces moving like that in Jang-Ki.

And, also, Jang-Ki's pieces are moving along the lines. So, I usually build the attack and defense strategy based on the lines. But.. in Chess, pieces are moving along not the lines but the 'area' (I don't know how to exactly explain this...). So, it's a lot confusing to make a strategy.
Moreover, I still don't understand the 'stalemate' rule..

I played Chess with PC several times, and I just won one time... PC's are too good in my standard :)

Nevertheless, I think Chess is quite good game as much as Jang-Ki.

Let's play it!!

I bought Macbook pro today.

The problem is that... I don't have enough time to play with that now. It's still sealed. T_T...
Nevertheless, I'll upload the photos of my macbook soon.

I also got an iPod touch 8G, for free :), through the apple promotion 'Back to School'.
I was planning to sell the iPod to compensate the expenses I used to buy my macbook.
But.. after I had used it for a few days.. I just fell in love with the iPod :)
I can check email, papers, news and etc (including game!!) in my bed.
Of course, I jailbreaked the iPod.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

update #0. essential application : Firefox, Picasa3, Adium, VLC, Growl, smcFanControl, Gmail Notifier + Growl, iStatPro, Xee, NTFS-3G, MacFuse and etc.

update #1. OK don't use fink.. If you want to use it, just use it until installing python, numpy and scipy. Then independently install all other libraries without using fink (e.g. matplotlib, ipython, rpy and R!!!!!!.. piece of shit..)

update #2. OK macport looks not bad. so far so good. BTW, I'm installing R and rpy by myself now. I'm not using macport to install them.

update #3. I installed R and Rpy. Note that you can install any version of R higher than 2.6 on Leopard. During compiling rpy 1.0.3 you will get the error about the Rdevices.h. Just comment the 'include' line in Rpy.h in rpy/src directory. Then it should work.

update #3.1 I installed R 2.9.1 binary package compiled for Leopard. It provides nice GUI but... has some problems. If you run the R using the terminal, it cannot load tcltk library, which means you might not be able to use the GUI. Nevertheless, it doesn't matter for me because I might use R only in python environment :)

update #4. Texshop + BibDesk is quite cool.

update #5. There is no cut & paste in Finder as Window Explorer has...

update #5.1 Path Finder has a function for cut & paste. Nice.

update #6. UntraEdit for Linux/Mac is coming soon. I cannot wait!

update #7. Let's try to use Quicksilver. Everybody says it's a quite nice application.

update #8. Coherence mode of Parallel is awesome.

update #9. There is mac version DiffMerge. Nice.

update #101. wow.. iPod + Remote can control iTune on Mac!!! Awesome..
I don't need to wake up from my bed to turn on/off musics.
I copied about 80GB music files from my friend :)

------------------------------------------------

I have to admit that there are not as much great softwares for Mac as for Window.
So far, in my opinion, only one advantage of Mac is its user-friendly interface.
Nothing more than that. But, that is actually HUGE advantage over Window..
(ah, one more thing. If you use linux all the time, mac is a good choice for you just like for me.
I don't give much credit to Mac's pretty appearance. I prefer functionality than beauty.)

And, I also realized how much the Thinkpad T42, my previous laptop, is well-made laptop :)
